The Social Capital Survey
The Social Capital Survey in 20 Communities in Leicestershire is part the Leicestershire Local Area Agreement (LAA). Social Capital refers to the ‘glue’ that holds a community together and the ‘social resources’ that enable it to move on. This involves measuring and exploring trust, networks, neighbourliness, volunteering, diversity, inclusion and community cohesion. The process in Leicestershire introduced a new concept of volunteers from within communities conducting the surveys. Volunteer trainers were trained by The Centre for Social Action at De Montfort University and went on to train local volunteers. Each volunteer received £100 for their organisation.
In each District Voluntary Action Centre there is a Neighbourhood Worker, funded through the LAA. The Neighbourhood Workers have been mapping their target areas for community groups and voluntary activities. They have co-ordinated the surveys in their area and shared the results. Rather than imposing a framework for building stronger communities, there has been an innovative partnership which enabled communities to define, explore and develop the meaning of stronger communities. It is for each community to decide what action they take from the results.
